Our organization's name, Red Line Parkway Initiative, originates from the CapMetro Rail Red Line and Red Line Trail, approved by voters in 2004. The City of Austin and the City of Cedar Park then also adopted the name "Red Line Trail". We instead use ‘Parkway’ to emphasize that the corridor will consist of more than just a pavement strip but also natural surface trails, parks, and other public spaces. The term ’Initiative’ recognizes the special effort needed to complete this project, which has been ongoing for over 20 years. We plan to change our name due to concerns that "Red Line" may evoke the racist practice of redlining and work against our goal of inclusivity. We will engage the public for a new name that emphasizes the importance of the Parkway Plan process as part of our engagement for Parkway planning.
